Building your chicken coop and run.

There are a lot of factors to consider when building your chicken coop and run. How large does it need to be, how to keep predators out, and how to maintain it are questions you should be asking yourself. You will see so many YouTube videos ranging from all sorts of pens. The bottom line is that you do the best you can do with what you have.

When my daughter first “surprised” us with eight baby hens, we had just bought our land and lived 15 minutes away. The land was raw and didn’t even have water! She’d spent a fortune on a couple of prebuilt coops with runs attached and while they were cute, they did not last and were not going to keep the chickens safe out in the country for long. She went at it blindly without doing her research and it was tough…but we all pitched in and made it work.

Building a pen is the best way to house your hens.

There are loads of ideas on how to build chicken coops online, we even have a couple on our YouTube channel. But unless you know how to build things, it is a great idea to have a set of building plans to keep you on budget, and having a parts list makes it so much easier. EasyCoops is a site devoted to supplying you with just that. There are free plans and if you need extra help, they have some inexpensive plans you can download in a breeze for just $15! This can save you so much stress, time, and energy!

We live in zone 8b where it can be so humid in the summer your lungs can feel like they are drowning. When it gets so hot in the summer, the fall and winter can be a great time to build for spring. Maybe give the gift of coop plans to a loved one this holiday season. For some, the winter is too cold to build, but it can be a great time to start planning!

Please consider sharing your stories below, I’d love to hear about them. Best of luck to you!
