We should be at the Conway Farmer’s Market this Saturday!
We will have our 2nd harvest of honey, freeze-dried onions from our garden, and our very own farm-fresh eggs from our chickens and ducks. Depending on how they look, we are hoping to harvest some peppers and cucumbers as well. We’ll also bring a few young Aloe Vera plants and some fine art prints too.
Fruits

Our blueberry bushes are still very small, but I am happy with their progress. We planted them last year; this is their first year in the ground. They will grow between eight to ten feet tall and wide, so they still have a ways to go.

My new pear tree is around four feet tall, and I am impressed with how much fruit it already has; George had to stake it for me because the little branches were bending over with the weight of the pears. He is concerned about some black spots he found that are probably a fungal disease caused by all the rain we’ve been getting. However, he is spraying them at night with an organic antifungal spray, and I’m saying a little prayer that it works. My brother has a large pear tree full of baby pears, but he said the squirrels gather at the trunk and eat them all in a matter of days. I’d try baffles, but I don’t think our tree is tall enough yet. We may have to resort to netting.
Onions

You may have read that we’d planted onions that ended up too small and few to bring to the Farmer’s Market. Well, we ended up peeling and chopping them up to freeze-dry them! The little Mylar bags should be in today for me to package them up for you.
Beeswax & Soap

Besides getting ready to harvest honey tomorrow, I am most excited about how I rendered beeswax this week. There wasn’t a lot to work with, but it’s plenty to start. I am going to be making soap soon and selling it at the market. I need as many locally sourced (50-mile radius) ingredients as possible. I’ve been working on this for the last couple of weeks, trying to locate as much as I can. I found a seller in Whiteville who makes cow’s buttermilk from their farm. We drove out there last Saturday and bought enough to get started. It will also contain our own honey and rendered beeswax.
Let me know if you are interested in how I did this, and I would be happy to write it up for you.
