Baby Lettuce

George was a busy man over the weekend. He set out a variety of baby lettuce in our raised beds. He built these beds so that the treated lumbar would not actually touch the soil. This allows the wood to stay dry and last longer, as well as not leach any chemicals into our plants.

Blueberries

He also finished building the cages for the new blueberries and installing their irrigation! He has the bird mesh halfway up the sides of the cages, and I really like how it’s looking overall. We did this to prevent the numerous birds from eating our harvest. To me, it looks much better to have them in this type of cage instead of having a net over each one.

It’s set up along the very back of our little farm, so when they mature, it will act as a natural privacy wall, at least in the warmer months. They should all be around six feet tall, which is perfect for privacy.

We have three varieties; I may have mentioned four in an earlier post, but we actually have four plants, each of which is a different variety. Two were purchased from Fast Growing Trees online, and they came very well packaged and in great health.

Tifblue, Brightwell, and PowderBlue

All three blueberries are the rabbiteye variety and will lose their leaves at some point as they are all deciduous shrubs. However, in the spring and summer, when we spend the most time outside, they should act as a nice buffer.

More to come on blueberries…
