Queens
A couple of weeks ago, our beautiful new queens arrived, and we get so many questions about the process.
In the video above, you can see they usually arrive in a little wooden box. The queens here are marked with a white dot this year, and we love this because it makes it so much easier to find. There is a different color each year.
A few nurse bees go into the box with the queen to help take care of her. The box contains a candy plug that keeps them in the box and will be consumed at both ends once placed in the hive. Once consumed and the queen is free, the hive is familiar with her pheromones. We have had great success with this.
Queens will need to be replaced every two to three years because of their age if you are raising bees for honey production. We are so fortunate to have a friend and fellow beekeeper who raises bees for more than just honey and loves to take our senior bees.
First, you have to figure out how many queens you will need and from where you will purchase them. Your local beekeeping club can help you find your best solution. We’ve bought them locally and ordered them through various companies, all with great success.
This year we splurged and purchased two Golden West Queens by Randy Oliver. It’s expensive to purchase and ship from California, but we are so excited to see how these selective bred queens will fair. They were graphed from a “Queen Zero” that is Varroa resistant.
