September was a tough month for us for a few reasons. Early in the month, both George and I caught COVID-19. We were up on our shots, so it only lasted a week, but right afterward, we got pinkeye, YUCK!
A few weeks later, Hurricane Helene destroyed all the areas around our beloved Asheville, NC, mountains. There is so much devastation in Buncombe County that people are still missing today.
Now we are at the end of October, and things are looking better. I believe most of Buncombe County has water and electricity again, and George’s fall garden has been doing great.
He has kept my guinea pigs happy and well-fed with beautiful leafy green varieties of lettuce.
George planted some elephant garlic, which takes around six months to be harvested, as well as some carrots and basil for fall plantings.
We have been working towards having a market garden in the spring, and to do so takes a lot of work. Before now, we have had raised garden beds filled with good soil and compost. For our market garden, we want to plant in the ground, and our ground needs a lot of help. George took some soil samples to our local Clemson extension office and learned that our dirt has as many nutrients as sawdust. Needless to say, it could take some time to build up good soil.
We’ve planted some crimson clover as a cover crop for areas we hope to branch out to, and are planning on adding lots of amendments to the spring garden. I’ve been creating a calendar of garden duties that need to be done each month moving forward for our growth zone.
The honey bees are preparing for the winter, and the neighbors have reached out to let us know that their gardens have never looked so good since the bees arrived. That makes us very happy. ☺
